DESCRIPTION:The MinSouth Prestige Lecture will be presented by Neil Kermode\, Managing Director of The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) Limited\, based in Orkney. \n  \n  \nJoin Teams Meeting  From 5.30 pm \nThis year’s Prestige lecture explores the relevance of mining in a climate change and zero carbon world. Are new mines necessary? Could we not be re-using/recycling metals already mined\, processed and discarded or still in circulation? How important is mining for new and developing clean technologies – electric cars\, renewable energy\, energy storage etc. \nWinning high energy materials from the earth was an excellent strategy for kickstarting the first Industrial Revolution. It allowed industry to site production where it needed to be and not just where the resources were\, it compacted processes and people into factories and enabled unheard of levels of production. \n But unfortunately we didn’t spot the downside of releasing these bound up materials… until recently. \n So now we know we need to act on carbon emissions\, the spotlight of attention has begun to swing onto less extractive approaches to making our lives work. This generally means moving from a linear process to more circular ones. It means using less and it means using that we have better\, and sometimes it means looking at the processes that made life possible before coal. \nOne part of that is the way in which we power and propel our economy. We all know we are decarbonising\, we see more EVs on the road and in the adverts on the (lower energy) TV; We have stopped burning coal for electricity and the UK had its first coal free month in May; we see more wind turbines and solar panels and we are participating in conversations about carbon daily. \n And there are things going on in the background\, often unseen. The carbon free world is under construction and new technologies are being developed. \n Neil Kermode manages the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney which has been tasked by Government to enable the development of the technology to harvest energy from the waves and tides around our coast. Set up in 2003 it has seen more devices (30) tested than at any other site in the world and has helped spur the decarbonisation of energy in Orkney. \n Neil brings a wealth of experience of the successes and challenges that have been faced by the pioneers and innovators to date and is passionate about the need to deliver a new industry. \n The lecture will explore some of the options that marine energy opens up; not just to the UK but the rest of the planet. Opportunities for new jobs\, businesses and ways to handle and utilise the energy harvested. \n Neil will also highlight the metals and minerals that may be increasingly important to the development and construction of these and other non-carbon energy sources (ie materials needed); and perhaps more importantly\, the battery and/or other energy storage provisions for the energy produced. \nExamples of the conundrum include that steel is needed for wind turbines – and steel needs mining iron ore and metallurgical process coal for the steel manufacturing; similarly metals needed for the marine energy technologies; and the rare earths and other metals/minerals needed for EVs\, renewables and storage etc. \n  \nJoin Teams Meeting  \nFrom 5.30 pm

SUMMARY:Dry Mineral Processing - for the Moon and Earth
DESCRIPTION:Kathryn Hadler of Imperial College is preparing a presentation entitled “Dry Mineral Processing – for the Moon and Earth”. \nJoin the Teams meeting \nUse of off-Earth resources\, or Space Resource Utilisation (SRU)\, is essential for the further exploration of space by humankind. Off-Earth resources will provide propellant\, oxygen\, water and building materials.  The production of oxygen from lunar soil is the first step in this process.  The overall flowsheet for lunar oxygen production is similar to that of terrestrial metal production from a mined ore.  The process flowsheets both include excavation\, haulage and beneficiation of the lunar soil or terrestrial ore to provide the feedstock for the chemical extraction of oxygen or metal. \nAs a mineral processing engineer\, Kathryn is interested in the beneficiation of lunar soils.  The environmental constraints on the Moon present a number of challenges for beneficiation of minerals\, including low gravity and a lack of air or water for transporting and separating minerals.  These challenges mean we must think differently about the way in which we separate minerals in space\, which has the potential to bring new ideas and approaches to terrestrial mineral separations.  In this talk\, we will look at the role of mineral processing in the lunar oxygen production flowsheet\, the challenges faced\, and how we might use SRU to transform our terrestrial mineral processing operations.

DESCRIPTION:Students selected from all the entries received will present 15-minute lectures on the subjects described below.  The winning presenter will have the opportunity to participate in the Regional Final on 26 March. \n  \nSam Casement \nImperial College London \nRegional Spectral Analysis of the Lofdal Alkaline Carbonatite Complex\, Namibia\, for Mineral Exploration \nUsing evidence from multi- and hyperspectral image data\, the geology\, mineralogy and formation of carbonatite dykes are considered at the Lofdal Alkaline Carbonatite Complex\, Namibia. Lofdal is situated in the Welwitschia inlier\, within the Congo Craton\, which was intruded post-tectonically in many phases\, including by the Oas Syenite and carbonatite dykes. In this study\, satellite\, airborne and drone-based data have been analysed to spectrally characterise the lithologies and mineralogy of the carbonatite complex\, and its relationship to the regional geology. Lithological interpretations have also been linked to the geological setting and spectral properties. The Spectral Angle Mapping classification technique is used for mineral mapping in the region. How the thin carbonatite dykes relate to the distribution of Rare Earth Elements in this area\, and the implications for economic potential\, are discussed. The analysis of multi- and hyperspectral imagery has enabled a regional assessment of prospectivity to be produced. \n  \nAlexander Moss \nOxford University – St Edmund Hall \nLithium Deposit Types and Problems Relating to Maximising Extraction. \nThe market for lithium is growing at an extraordinary rate in response to the increase in demand for rechargeable batteries\, principally in Electric Vehicles (EVs). Three types of lithium resources have been identified. 70% of the estimated resources are stored in brines\, predominantly in Chile\, Bolivia\, Argentina and China. The second most abundant deposit of lithium\, as Spodumene and Lepidolite predominantly\, are pegmatites. These constitute <1% of pegmatites observed globally. The final class of resources are unconventional lithium deposits\, including hectorite in Hector\, California\, and jadarite in Jadar\, Serbia. Issues arise when converting these resources into reserves\, principally with lithium brines. Brines are extracted from aquifers and left in pond exposed to solar radiation and the atmosphere for 18 months\, while evaporation increases the concentration of the brine. Excessive pumping of brines potentially diminishing extraction by dilution. Magnesium ions also act to inhibit the amount of lithium extracted from brines. \n  \nMaciej Zajaczkowski \nImperial College London \nREE properties\, extraction and outlook \nRare earth metals fulfil an important role in many aspects of modern technology and our daily lives. First to be discovered in the town of Ytterby\, rare earth metals have since been valued and utilized for their unique properties; allowing them to be utilized in electronic components\, powerful magnets\, efficient catalysts\, highly specific absorption spectrum pigments and many more. Due to their high demand and the scarcity of processable ores\, the extraction of rare earth metals in large quantities has proven to be a challenging task that has already taken a large toll on the environment. \nDuring this student led lecture\, I will discuss more about these elements and current improvements in extraction methods as well as potential solutions related to their environmental issues. \n  \nJacob Hartles \nExeter University \nMining Development: Ethics and Sustainability in modern mining \nAs cultural\, commercial\, and environmental pressures increasingly affect the mining industry\, the challenges emplaced must be addressed and a modernised response formulated. Technology and adaptation are key\, however\, the manner of such must complement the values of the complaints faced\, and as such human and legislative routes cannot be underestimated.  The talk will examine the chicken-and-egg nature of ethical pressures versus sustainability and efficiency gains. This broad examination is devolved into a variety of subtopics: the challenges of climate change\, resource scarcity\, and “social license to operate” in 21st century mining; developing technologies and their downstream impacts with a focus on water and energy\, and approaches to cultural and societal challenges. Thus concluding on a proposal for activities and developments that have beneficial economic and social returns. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Since 2017\, factors affecting climate change have influenced car manufacturers to adopt policies to reduce or cease manufacturing of cars using fossil fuels. \nThis plus the health effects of poorly maintained and polluting diesel engines has affected a much wider audience with mining being no exception. The use of electric vehicles is being rolled out and with it the demand for battery minerals. The focus of mining companies has changed to supplying what is the biggest growth market in a commodity\, possible ever. \nManufacturers of mining equipment have quickly taken up the challenge and have started to produce a range of electric equipment powered by direct connection or battery. \nMining companies and manufacturers are actively looking how to supply and process the raw materials that go into battery manufacture\, as well as the the practicalities and limitations of using electric vehicles in very arduous conditions. \nThe Mining Technology Division (MTD) of the IOM3 associated with the Association of British Mining Equipment Companies (ABMEC) are hosting a conference entitled Mining for and with the Electric Vehicles at 297 Euston Road\, London NW1. \nThe aim is to bring together those companies that mine and process battery minerals with those that use the minerals to manufacture batteries and those that use those batteries in electric vehicles. SUMMARY:Tailings Management - What is Best Practice
DESCRIPTION:On 4 March 2019\, the Global Minerals Professional Alliance (GMPA) announced it would seek to address global action on tailings with help from various organisations including IOM3. \nThe initiative will focus on examining tailings from the perspective of disposal and closure\, help move forward discussions and solutions for tailings management\, reprocessing and reuse in a bid to move towards the elimination of tailings. \nTailings are the solid material plus varying degrees of runoff and process water (waste) remaining after the recoverable metals and minerals have been extracted from mined ore. The physical and chemical characteristics of the tailings vary with the nature of the ore\, its geological setting and the climate where the tailings are placed.  Tailings are most commonly stored in surface facilities\, which can represent a significant area of disturbance at mining operations.  They have ongoing and severe safety risks associated with their storage. \nMining companies\, professional groups\, industry organizations\, and academics have expressed renewed interest in tailings management following the disaster that took place in late January at Vale’s Corrego do Feijão operation\, where a tailings dam collapsed\, killing more than 300 people. \nIn light of the GMPA announcement\, the three divisions of IOM3 associated with the mineral extraction industries (Mining Technology\, Mineral Processing & Extractive Metallurgy\, and Applied Earth Science Divisions)\, in association with MinSouth\, are hosting a seminar focused on Mine Tailings Management at 297 Euston Road\, London NW1. \nThe aim is to bring together representatives of the various organisations and experts in tailings management to speak on the issues surrounding tailings dam construction\, safety\, maintenance and inspection. \nThe conference will cover a wide scope\, from ‘how tailings dams work’\, current tailings management\, geotechnical considerations\, international policy\, the future of tailings and other uses of mine waste. \nThe presentations will focus on: \n\nAn international standard for tailings dams\, including classification and systems for review\nAlternative strategies for mine tailings\nEmergency planning and preparedness\nWays to use existing resources and data to create and improve research and training initiatives\n\nThis conference is an ideal opportunity for mining company staff\, mine managers\, geotechnical and tailings engineers\, consultants\, regulators and academics to convene and discuss ideas\, learn of new technologies and developments and debate the issues related to mine waste storage.  It is the intention that the collected papers will become an invaluable guide to Best Practice Tailings Management. \nIn addition to the progamme of invited speakers\, offers of papers are welcome – deadline 30 June 2019:

DESCRIPTION:Fiona Cessford\, Director and Corporate Consultant (Environment) at SRK Consulting (UK) will give a talk entitled \n“Impact assessment and feasibility studies – amalgamate or separate”. \nWe like to think the bad old days of impact assessment studies being done solely to obtain the necessary permits are in the past\, but are they? Unfortunately there are still companies out there who separate and isolate these processes. Proportional impact assessment and amalgamation with project development studies is not just about permitting and keeping local communities informed\, it also aims to maximise efficiencies in initial spend\, understand and plan for project risks and add significant value when it comes to raising finance or selling the project. The ways in which these aims can be met and the risks of getting it wrong will be discussed with reference to case studies. \nFiona Cessford MSc\, PrSciNat is a Corporate Consultant with over 25 years’ experience in environmental and social (E&S) management. Fiona’s global experience includes ESIAs\, permitting\, project engineering studies and due diligence reviews. As part of multidisciplinary teams\, she provides E&S expertise with reference to the Equator Principles and IFC Performance Standards\, as well as host country requirements. \nFiona has worked both as a regulator at the UK’s Environment Agency (8 years) and as a consultant in SRK’s South African and UK practices (20 years). Fiona’s E&S experience spans preparation and management of ESIAs\, input to project engineering studies (PEAs\, PFSs\, FSs etc)\, management planning\, closure planning\, risk management\, audit and due diligence\, technical advice on water and waste issues and environmental reporting. She regularly works with multidisciplinary due diligence teams\, commenting on E&S and health & safety risks associated with new and existing mining and infrastructure projects as input to competent persons reports\, mergers & acquisitions and financial transactions. She has been the independent engineer (environment) for a number of loan agreements in sub-Saharan Africa and Europe\, focusing on compliance with the Equator Principles and IFC Performance Standards\, as well as host country requirements. SUMMARY:General meeting - 150 Years of Steel
DESCRIPTION:Roger Emmott\, a recent Past-President of MinSouth and consultant to the iron and steel industry\, will give a presentation on the evolution of steel as a complex and versatile material that has facilitated the modern world as we know it\, over a relatively short space of time (150 years). \nStarting in 1869\, the presentation will cover the evolution of primitive iron into cast-iron and then wrought iron and then finally the discovery that steel could be refined and more latterly using many alloying elements to bestow potentially a wider range of structures and properties than any other material.  This is achieved through processes largely attributed to Bessemer\, with modifications by Gilchrist\, and then the advent of the Siemens Martin open hearth furnace\, and finally the realisation around 1948 by Durrer in Austria\, that oxygen can be used more effectively. \nIt will also profile the slow but sure evolution of technology\, including the migration of steel ingots into continuous casting\, the increased sophistication of hot rolling\, the advent of thin slab flat rolling pioneered by SMS and Nucor\, and more latterly\, direct strip casting as epitomised by the Castrip process also now being commercialised by Nucor. \nStarting in 1869\, it will review the growth of the industry worldwide\, and its many complexities\, including the cultural revolution of China and the backyard furnaces in 1958\, and subsequent developments. \nAnd what of the future? Steel consumption is predicted to continue to grow. Is that possible?  How will the steel of the future be made?  Will blast furnaces die?  As time goes by\, more steel is consumed in the world\, so more of it is available to recycle with steel being the most recycled material in the world.  There are some issues regarding quality but can these be overcome?  Will we see more innovative uses of steelmaking\, more use of electric arc furnaces which are much more carbon efficient than blast furnaces\, which in turn will mean less use of iron ore? \nRoger Emmott is an expert witness and consults on business strategy\, business development\, innovation and advising the global metals and mining sector.  \nHe has advised clients in over 50 countries\, including strategic\, due diligence\, market and feasibility studies for leading engineering consultancies Hatch and Atkins. He is experienced at managing projects\, especially those with diverse global virtual teams.  \nRoger is a Chartered Engineer\, a Fellow of the Institute of Minerals\, Materials and Mining (IOM3) and a serving Council member of Minsouth\, as well as being the Past President 2016/17.  He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Consulting and the Chartered Management Institute.  \n
