Lecture: The journey to GISTM compliance (lessons learnt over the last 5 years)

Talk synopsis: Since its release six years ago, the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) has posed significant challenges for the mining industry as companies work toward conformance with its requirements. This presentation examines the aspects of the Standard that have proven most difficult for clients to address and highlights the practical issues that have emerged during implementation. Drawing on three global case studies, it explores how different operations have approached these challenges, the lessons learned along the way, and the strategies that have supported progress toward conformance.

Speaker bio: Jacqueline Meldrum is a Environmental Geoscientist with a background in hydrogeology, environmental science, and water management. Prior to joining Knight Piésold, she worked on projects in Peru, including Santander, Quiulacocha historical tailings, and Los Tambos 2. Her work there involved conducting environmental monitoring for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), assessing water treatment plant operations, and regulatory compliance in pollution control. She holds a BSc in Environmental Science with Hydrogeology, an MSc in Flood Risk Management and Nature-Based Engineering and is certified in the Principles and Fundamentals of Hydrogeology Applied to Mines from the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), 2023.

At Knight Piésold’s London office, Jacqueline has contributed to tailings and mine waste projects across multiple global projects. Her KP experience includes GISTM conformance work across global operations, support on a dam safety review and TSF audits, technical supervision for geotechnical investigations in Europe, and EoR support for projects in Europe and Africa.
