History

From 1958 to today — a history of mergers and local societies.

Summary of history

MinSouth is the current incarnation in a long history of local branches and sections representing the major professional mining bodies based in the United Kingdom. MinSouth took its present form as a local society of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, the IOM3, in October 2004.

Timeline

MinSouth’s history traces back to 1958, following the same chain of mergers and local societies that shaped the national mining institutions we now know as IOM3.

1958

Founding as the Southern Counties Institute of Mining Engineers

Inaugurated on 22 January as a local branch of the Institution of Mining Engineers (IMinE), which became an important hub for members after IMinE relocated its headquarters from London to Doncaster.

1982

The origin of the Prestige Lecture

The Southern Counties branch launches its Special Invitation Lecture, an annual set-piece MinSouth still runs today.

1994

A local IMM presence forms (SEESIMM)

As attendance at the IMM’s London evening meetings declined through the 1980s, the South East of England Section of the IMM is formed to maintain a regional focus.

1996

Local bodies join forces

Representatives of the IMinE, the IMM, and the Minerals Engineering Society come together to form the South East Minerals Association, running joint monthly meetings from the following year.

1998

A joint council, following national merger

After the IMinE and IMM merge nationally, the region’s societies form a joint council, becoming the Southern Counties Branch of the new IMM.

2002

IOM3 is formed

Nationally, the Institute of Materials merges with the IMM to create the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3).

2004

MinSouth takes its present form

The branch becomes IOM3’s local society for the region, adopting the name MinSouth.

Today

A thriving regional community

MinSouth represents over 800 members across London and the South East, continuing traditions like the Prestige Lecture and the Mining Sundowner alongside talks, site visits, and student sponsorship.
