The Klondike Gold Rush (1896 to 1899)

November 19 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Matt Cook, from Mott Macdonald

Matt’s talk will present a “potted history” of the last great gold rush in North America. It will explore how this event represented a transition between old traditions and the new age of electricity.

The presentation will cover:

  • A “colourful cast of characters,” including Diamond Toothed Gertie, Skookum Jim, and George and Kate Carmack.
  • The geological setting of the Yukon.
  • The traditional and new mining methods that were used.
  • Why the region remains a fascinating place for gold prospecting today.

Matt is a Chartered Geologist based in Croydon. He studied Geological Sciences at the University of Leeds and spent a year in New Zealand. His early career focused on Mineral Exploration and Geological Mapping, with work at mine sites in Canada and Ireland. After obtaining a Masters in Engineering Geology, he joined Mott MacDonald, where he has been involved in major UK infrastructure projects like HS2 and Crossrail2, as well as smaller projects across the country. Internationally, he has worked on Hydropower schemes in Zambia and Albania and port upgrades in Senegal and Guyana. In his spare time, he enjoys travel, history, and playing Croquet.
