Mineral Characterization for Optimum Sensor-Based Sorting
Installations of both bulk and particle sensor-based sorting (SBS) in the mining industry have increased significantly recently. However, SBS still lacks industry recognition as a pre-concentration technology. In addition to mineralogical characterization, different sensors and their performance parameters are key to understanding orebody heterogeneity characteristics exploited by SBS. Current SBS testwork is often hit-or-miss—or worse, amenability is assessed only by desktop study using default parameters from “similar ores.” This gap in standardized methodology for SBS characterization is often linked to…

Using Science to Maximize Sorting Efficiency
Recent implementations of sensor-based sorting have shown major positive impacts on mining economics. Maximizing sorting efficiency requires two linked pieces of information: particle size and particle grade. In addition to reducing downstream processing, particle sorting improves throughput of viable ore. In general, the coarser the size fraction, the easier the sorting and the greater the economic rewards. Intimately linked to particle size is target mineral grade. Successful upgrading relies on understanding the relationship between target mineral grade and size fraction…
