MinSouth Heat of the IOM3 Young Persons’ Lecture Competition, 10th March 2022
Despite being held for a second year running as an on line / virtual event, last Thursdays’s YPLC was a clear success, proceeding smoothly thanks to the organisation of Richard Roethe our Vice President and Younger Members’ Representative.
This year we received a record total of fifteen abstracts, following publicity through our student representatives, company sponsors, Women in Mining and our sites on social media.
Abstracts were judged by Council members based on quality, style and relevance to the mining industry and the following four were selected:
- Martha Needs – (Knight Piesold) – „Reducing the Risk of Legacy Tailings Facilities“
- Manvir Dhillon – (Royal School of Mines / ICL) – „How does Lithium mining contribute to domestic water shortages in Northern Chile“
- John Morley– (Royal School of Mines / ICL) – „Increasing Demand for Minerals and Metals for the Green Energy Transistion – a Wicked Problem?“
- David Coulton (Paterson & Cooke) – „Backfill Design: Engineering Waste for Sustainable Mining“
This year’s judges were two of our recent Past Presidents, Mike McLoughlin and Sue Struthers together with Lucy Crane of Cornish Lithium / Women in Mining.
Under normal circumstances, our audience would depart for a beer and pizza while the judges cogitated, however this year our judges were the ones to depart, to a separate breakout room. To fill the time our online audience of members and guests were provided with a short presentation by Sarah Boad, on IOM3 Membership and Professional Development.
All four candidates gave strong presentations, however after deep discussion our judges decided that Martha Needs was this year’s winner, receiving her prize of £200 with £100 awarded to each of the other three competitors.

We really hope that next year we will be able to return to our normal venue at the Royal School of Mines with the opportunity for our students and younger members to meet up and network with our more seasoned professionals in our post-competition get together.

MinSouth Mining Quiz 2021
MinSouth Christmas Mining Quiz was held on Tuesday 14th December when the GoToMeeting platform was used for presenting the questions in this virtual meeting. Five teams entered the competition using a variety of ways to communicate between themselves to debate the answers.
Questions were posed, to cover the range of disciplines embraced by MinSouth, namely, geology, mining, processing and related environmental issues with rounds on general knowledge, mining trivia, review of the year and to finish off a picture round.
Our thanks go to Julian Aldridge for setting the questions and Clive Hallett for stepping in to deputise as the quiz master for the evening.
It was great to see teams from “Scotchegg” Resources, led by Elly Shaw and Knight Piésold led by Cloe Lam competing once more and this year and, for the first time, a team of students from Camborne School of Mines led by our CSM Student Rep Alice Burdett. Two teams were also generated comprised of individual members grouped to achieve a breadth of professional disciplines, which seemed to have a successful outcome. “The No Clues,” led by Simon Kocher, our President, achieving the top score of 39. They were closely followed by “The Barbarians”, led by Ian Jackson, scoring 38 and a respectable score of 31 by the student team “The Underminers” .
We do hope that in future years we will able to hold this event as a hybrid meeting, enabling those present to enjoy a drink together afterwards. Nevertheless the screenshot of a number of participants shown below would seem to show a good time was had by all.
