We have vacancies on our MinSouth Council for next season starting this coming October, and I would like to invite anyone with an interest to get in contact with me for further details. The deadline for applications is the end of August and we would particularly like to encourage younger professionals and women to join us to maintain representation from the broad cross section of our membership.
As you will be aware, over the past year our monthly technical presentations have been virtual, each preceded by a Council Meeting. Once restrictions permit, we are looking to return to physical meetings at a regular venue, while keeping the ability for virtual attendance. To encourage younger professionals to join Council we are also looking into continuing with virtual Council meetings in the future to facilitate participation.
We had our last evening meeting for 2020 / 2021 on 10th June, our Annual Prestige Lecture, this year given by Owen Mihalop of Cornish Metals Inc, on Tin. Being a virtual meeting, this attracted an audience from far and wide, with registration by over 60 members and non-members. This year our President initiated Lunchtime “Snap” meetings which have also proved to be popular with you, with companies giving short presentations on new technologies and techniques developed for the mining industry.
Our company sponsors continue to support our educational initiatives, and in addition to presenting sponsorship awards to final year students, we have been looking into how MinSouth can contribute to on-going and future initiatives to promote mining as a career option at secondary school level. We would like to encourage our members, especially the younger professionals amongst you to become involved – so watch this space.
Our provisional programme for next year includes a variety of topics including gold exploration, lithium and tungsten production, rare earths and critical metals in the circular economy. This is alongside our joint meetings with the British Tunnelling Society, Women In Mining, the YPLC and our ever popular Christmas Mining Quiz. Further details will be posted on the Events page on our website, www.minsouth.org.uk.
Once again, if you are interested in becoming a Councillor, and help us in shaping MinSouth for the future please do contact me.
