We are pleased to announce that Mike McLoughlin has received an Outstanding Service Award from IOM3.  Mike was elected to Council in 2013, serving as President for 2020-2021 and remains a very active Councillor.

He played a key role in setting up the MinSouth website, has been our webmaster for many years and was instrumental in including video recordings of talks. This greatly expanded the reach of our technical presentations to an audience far wider than was previously possible. His efforts as webmaster were a huge benefit during the pandemic, enabling us to continue reaching out to members, student groups and the wider community.

Mike’s flair for IT has been the driver for setting up hybrid meetings, enabling us to operate physically at our City venue together with a virtual audience from as far away as Saudi Arabia and Canada.

Our other news is that Professor Alan Stainer and Gavin Bowyer have decided to hang up their boots (and hard hats), stepping down as Councillors at the end of this season.  Alan has been on MinSouth Council since the merger of IMM with IoM and previously on the equivalent bodies for IMinE and IMM since 1983. He was closely followed by Gavin, who has followed a different route via the SE branch of the IMM back in 1994.  Between them they have over 60 years of service in these local branches and their contributions have been greatly appreciated.

Consequently, we do have some vacancies on Council for next season starting this coming October, and I would like to invite anyone with an interest to get in contact with me for further details.  The deadline for applications is the end of August and we would particularly like to invite younger professionals and women to join us to maintain representation from the  broad cross section and range of disciplines which make up our membership.

If you are interested in becoming a MinSouth Councillor, please do contact me.
